“National Occupational Standards (NOS) specify the standard of performance an individual must achieve when carrying out a function in the workplace, together with specifications of the underpinning knowledge and skills.”

They express ‘what an individual needs to do, know and understand in order to carry out a particular job role or function’. Each NOS defines the performance standards for a job role and consists of multiple Unit Standards. NOSs are defined by employers through their respective Sector Skill Unit (SSU).

NOSs can make a major contribution to the design of high-quality education and training programs by ensuring that they are directly linked to the needs of the workplace and overall economy. They are multipurpose instruments which serve a number of different purposes for varied stakeholders in education & training as well as within the labor market (employers as well as employees).

The benefits of NOSs are far and wide at various levels, ranging from individual student or employee to the overall national economy level.

At individuals and students level, they provide opportunities for recognition, progression and increased career mobility.

At the employer’s/ industry level, they lead the path for a more relevant education and training programs and qualifications and a better “assurance” of human resource competence. They also provide a reference point for performance appraisal and contribute to human resource development processes related to the Job description, performance appraisal and career progression for example.

At Nation Economy level, they increase its ability to compete with other economies and promotes its potential to economic growth, by assuring the availability of the skill sets required by the labor market, and also by contributing to creating consistency in the training programs and providing benchmarks to assure the quality of training nationally.
